These Are The #1 Gamer Dad Gifts

I have been a lifelong gamer since the 1980s. I am currently in my mid thirties and started playing games when the original Nintendo came out. This is a topic I know a lot about!

So, what are the best gamer dad gifts? Every year there are amazing new games being released on the PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Mac, and PC. You have quite a few options these days. I personally love the PS4, Switch, and I use a Mac for work and end up playing games on that once in awhile. In my opinion, the best gifts for gamer dads are, quite simply, games! Sure, there are some cool merchandise, guides & books, etc… However, deep down in your gamer dad’s soul, all he really wants is a fun game to get lost in and enjoy.

In this post I will discuss popular games and my choices on the three top gaming consoles. PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.

Exclusive PS4 Games For Dad

These are exclusive PS4 titles that you can not purchase for any other gaming platform.

If your dad is rocking the PS4 like I do, here are my favourite games and recommendations for this console. Everyone has their preferences, but for me, the PS4 is my favourite. I love the controllers, the user interface, everything is easy to find and change in the settings. I have never had a Playstation die on me, I can not say the same for Xbox which I have had the infamous “xbox red circle of death” happen to me three times.

#1) God Of War – I would say most people would agree, that for a dad, this is the game to get him. At the time of me writing this, there is no better PS4 exclusive title. This game is stunning in so many ways. If you were a fan of the previous games, then it’s mandatory that you pick up a copy of God Of War.

This game offers an amazing adventure with incredible graphics in an immersive Norse world. Compared to previous titles, the main character Kratos has a great story behind him besides just killing everything in sight. This game is a must-have for any PS4 gamer’s collection!

  • Released: 2018
  • Genre: Adventure
  • Single Player

#2) Horizon Dawn Zero – Making friends with tribes, hunting dinosaurs, and searching out every little secret in a massive post-apocalyptic wasteland sounds boring right? WRONG! This game is insane in such a good way and in so many ways.

One of the best open world experiences you could ever have on any gaming system at any point in time. This game has so much to offer. Explore the world and the primitive tribes that are rebuilding as sentient robotic animals roam the lands. I can’t recommend this one enough! Enhanced for PS4 Pro, the graphics are incredible.

  • Released: 2017
  • Genre: Adventure
  • Single Player

#3) The Uncharted Series – I don’t think there is another game series that I have played where I have spent more hours completing every single minute it has to offer. These games really sucked me in and made me feel like I was really there, immersed in the world and adventures of Nathan Drake and more recently, Chloe and Nadine.

These games feel like a modern day Indiana Jones, hunting down treasures, solving ancient puzzles and traps, fighting and gun slinging galore! Naughty Dog makes these games and they found a formula that works so great, I can’t get enough of them. If your gamer dad has never played these, I highly recommend getting him involved ASAP!

There are 5 games to play in the series, here they are in order:

  • UNCHARTED: The Nathan Drake Collection (3 games in 1)
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (My favourite!)
  • Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

#4) Persona 5 – I am embarrassed to say that I am late to the party on this game. I have never played it but it is next on my list of games to dig deep into. Apparently, it is one of the best JRPG games ever created. I have never played the series but I keep hearing amazing reviews about it and seeing it in top list of games everywhere.

  • Released: Japan September 15, 2016 and WorldWide April 4th, 2017.
  • Genre: Role-playing, social simulation
  • Single Player

These choices are my personal selections, everyone is different. A few other great exclusive games your dad may love would be Spiderman, Detriot: Become Human, The Last Guardian, The Witcher: Wild Hunt, and Bloodborne.

Exclusive Xbox Games For Dad

In all honesty, I have had quite a few issues with Xbox in the past. I have owned multiple that kept breaking down on me for hardware issues. The Xbox One seems to have been built better, however, I bought two for my son which both had problems.

I am mentioning this because I am not as familiar with Xbox exclusive game titles as well as I am the PS4. However, I have played some a lot and here are a few you should consider.

#1) Halo: The Master Chief Collection & Halo 5: Guardians РThis is a killer collection that any Xbox owner should have. In the past I was deep into these games and eventually played along side my son who also fell in love with them. These shooters have a great feeling, the controls and gun fights are super fun. The unique weapons and vehicles make it a blast to play.

I listed two different games here, The Master Chief Collection includes the first four Halo games. You can purchase this game at any game shop or on Amazon like I normally do.

Then lastly, the 5th and most recent game is Halo 5: Guardians which my son was in love with. He highly recommends this for anyone to play.

  • Released: 2015
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter
  • Single player & Multiplayer

#2) Forza Motorsport 7 – I don’t play racing games as much as I should but creating this list reminded me of how much fun I used to have playing them. The Forza game series has been around for a long time now. Previous games in the series were not that special but people are raving about Forza Motorsport 7. The feeling of driving the car is superb, the collisions realistic, and a much better AI.

If you dad is up for some sweaty palm full speed racing, this is the game for him. Lot’s of fun to be had here.

  • Released: 2017
  • Genre: Racing
  • Single Player & Multiplayer

#3) Sea of Thieves – Full disclosure, I have never played this game. However, it’s the one game that makes me jealous that I don’t know an Xbox anymore. It looks like a ton of fun and you can play with your friends. You take to the high seas, fighting hordes of skeletons and undead sea captains, drinking grog, and singing sea shanties with your friends.

Based on the research I have done, this is a fantastic game that any Xbox gamer dad needs to add to his collection.

  • Released: 2018
  • Genre: Action- Adventure
  • Multiplayer

Exclusive Nintendo Switch Games For Dad

I grew up playing Nintendo but as I got older I moved towards the Xbox and PS gaming consoles where they offered games for teenagers and young adults. However, I recently bought a Switch for my daughter and I have to say it has brought back all those awesome feelings from my childhood.

The graphics are much better than I expected, the controllers are easy to use, and Nintendo are the masters of making these really pure fun games. Sometimes on this big PS4 game titles, I find myself getting bored and grinding large parts of the games. For Nintendo games, I find myself immersed and laughing constantly with my daughter as we play through level after level.

#1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – If you have ever played a Zelda game during your life. I am not even going to say anything. You already know you have to buy this game. It’s truly amazing. If our dad played games in the 90s, chances are he played Zelda and loved it. Grab a copy of this game for him to bring hours of joy and childhood fun back to his life!

  • Scored a 10/10 by IGN!
  • Released: 2017
  • Genre: Action-Adventure
  • Single Player

#2) Super Mario Odyssey – My daughter and I freaking love this game. I can’t recommend it enough. Actually, out of any game on my PS4, Switch, or Mac, this game wins it all.

The great thing about the Switch that I was happy about when buying it for my daughter, is that it comes with two controllers. The other gaming systems make you pay $80 (in Canadian beaver dollars) for another controller which really annoys me!

Super Mario Odyssey is a killer game, in two player mode, one person controls Mario and the other controls his magical hat who can jump on things, collect coins, and turn into other characters in the game. This is the most fun I have ever had with a Mario game.

  • Released: 2017
  • Genre: Platform, Action Adventure
  • Single player & Multiplayer

#3) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – It would be crazy not to add this game to the list. The Mario Kart series is a true legend in the history of all games. Mario Kart 8 already existed, but was re-done into the deluxe edition. The deluxe edition includes all released DLC content and new 1080p graphics at 60 fps (frames per second) while docked and streaming to the TV.

This game is another one that will bring back great memories if your dad played the original back in the day like myself. The three games listed for the Switch will provide you with months, if not, years of fun.

  • Released: 2017
  • Genre: Kart Racing
  • Single Player & Multiplayer

Conclusion

Even though your dad may be getting older (It’s hard for me to admit), he is probably still a kid at heart, especially if he was born in the 1970s and 1980s. Arcade games and the Nintendo exploded, creating generations of gamers who never lost their love for gaming.

We all have our own hobbies and you should never make him feel like he is too old to play. Grab a game or two for him and maybe consider jumping in with him to see what it’s all about. I hope my list of the #1 gamer dad gifts was helpful. Thanks for reading!
